Sales and Use Tax Notices

Beware of phony state tax auditors!

Individuals posing as sales tax auditors have been reportedly using false identification cards to gain access to the financial records of businesses and have been implicated in thefts. Please note:

  • Maryland sales and use tax auditors do not show up at your business unannounced, asking to review your financial records
  • Legitimate sales and use tax auditors have valid state IDs which specifically authorize them to check business records
  • If in doubt, call 410-767-1500 in the Baltimore area, or 1-800-492-1751, extension 1500 from elsewhere in Maryland
