Comptroller Franchot Announces Agency's New Accounting Chief:
Former Westminster Treasurer To Lead Agency’s Oldest Division
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (June 15, 2009) - Comptroller Peter Franchot today announced the appointment of Roland L. Unger, 59, of Hunt Valley, Md., as the head of the agency's general accounting division.
Most recently the treasurer and director of finance for the city of Westminster, Unger will lead the state’s accounting activities and corporate purchasing card program in addition to producing Maryland’s annual financial report and ensuring 20,000 vendor payments. Unger is replacing John Kenney, a 34-year veteran of the department. Accounting functions were the first tasks of the Comptroller’s Office when it was created in 1851.
Comptroller Franchot Applauds School Construction Funding Vote
Annapolis, Md. (May 6, 2009) - In keeping with his commitment to strengthening Maryland's best-in-the-nation public school system, Comptroller Peter Franchot joined Governor Martin O'Malley and Treasurer Nancy Kopp as the Board of Public Works unanimously voted to approve the recommendations by the Interagency Committee for School Construction (IAC) for the final $65 million in previously unallocated school construction funding for Fiscal Year 2010. Leading up to today's vote, the Comptroller visited over a dozen schools across the state. The visits to schools, ranked as high priorities by the local jurisdictions, allowed the Comptroller to hear directly from the county school officials, teachers, students and parents as to the desperate need for funding.
Long-Time Tax Scofflaw Sentenced Up to 10 Years
ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 29, 2009) - Comptroller Peter Franchot today announced that one of Maryland’s worst tax scofflaws, Lloyd Binion, was sentenced today up to 10 years in state prison after pleading guilty in February to two counts of failure to pay nearly $400,000 in sales and use and withholding taxes to the state. Binion received the maximum 5 year sentence with each count, which could be suspended after 18 months in jail. The guilty pleas were a result of a four-year-long investigation by Comptroller auditors into Binion’s restaurant business, which led to a 13-count indictment by the Harford County State’s Attorney Office. Mr. Binion is required to report to the State Department of Corrections on July 23.

Comptroller Franchot Names Top 50 Tax Scofflaws

(February 12, 2009) - After receiving a tip from a Maryland State Trooper, agents for Comptroller Peter Franchot confiscated nearly 4,000 packs of contraband cigarettes and arrested a New York man for the second time last night along Interstate 95 north in Cecil County. Trooper Jeremy Gussoni, assigned to the Pro-Active Criminal Enforcement (PACE) unit of the Maryland State Police, observed a large quantity of cigarettes in the vehicle during a traffic stop and notified the Comptroller’s Field Enforcement Division.

Comptroller's New Compliance Initiative Brings in Millions in First Month
ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 4, 2009) - Reinforcing his commitment to expand and enhance tax compliance efforts, Comptroller Peter Franchot today announced that his Modernized Integrated Tax System (MITS), in just its initial stages, has already brought in over $3 million in delinquent taxes over the past month. Annapolis, MD (January 21, 2009) - In a storm of cloudy and troubling national economic news, Comptroller Peter Franchot today provided a ray of sunshine for thousands of taxpayers when he announced that his office recently mailed refund checks to taxpayers who qualified for the state's Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) but did not claim it on their 2007 tax returns. In total, the Comptroller's Office sent out 2,339 checks totaling $572,746. The Comptroller also urged all Marylanders to file electronically this year to help the state save money, to ensure speedy refunds and to delay payments for taxpayers who owe money.

Annapolis, MD (January 14, 2009) - In an effort to acknowledge Maryland tax preparers who file their clients' income tax returns electronically, Comptroller Peter Franchot today recognized one tax preparer from each county and Baltimore City, who recently implemented the E-File system when filing tax returns. The awardees were selected for having the highest percentage of increase of returns over last year. More than 1.5 million tax returns were filed electronically in 2008, of which 982,358 were filed by commercial tax preparers. Overall, there was a 10.5% increase in electronic filing compared to last year.
Comptroller's Office Mails 1099G Forms to Taxpayers
