ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 5, 2006)—Comptroller William Donald Schaefer today issued the following statement regarding the need for state intervention in Baltimore City schools:
“It’s time for the Legislature to stop playing politics with the issue and let Nancy Grasmick do her job so she can save the children of Baltimore City from its failing schools. No one has been as dedicated or worked as tirelessly as Nancy has to fix the problems that bedevil the city school system. However, those who would play politics with the issue continually throw up roadblocks to her efforts. And who suffers? The children and families of the City of Baltimore. They’ve never had a better advocate than Nancy Grasmick.”
State involvement to address chronically underperforming Baltimore City schools has been an issue of much contention this legislative session.
