ANNAPOLIS, MD (July 28, 2006) - Comptroller William Donald Schaefer has issued the following statement regarding the conviction and sentencing of Enoch Moon, 39, of Elkridge, Md., for knowingly shipping, transporting, receiving, possessing, selling, distributing and purchasing contraband cigarettes:
"This is another victory for the taxpayers of Maryland and legitimate businesses in the state. All parties involved now have closure and can move forward. Mr. Moon is guilty of smuggling and selling untaxed cigarettes. He will now pay back his debt. For Mr. Moon, this means paying $427,000 to the taxpayers of Maryland, six months in jail, six months of home detention and three additional years of probation. The taxpayers of Maryland are well served. A great amount of teamwork has been performed by the U.S. States Attorney's Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as my own agents and support staff to bring this matter to a favorable end on their behalf."
