Annapolis, MD (March 21, 2008) - Comptroller Peter Franchot reminded taxpayers today about the approaching April 15 tax filing deadline and offered tips for last-minute filers.
"Although the deadline is less than a month away, taxpayers shouldn't panic. The Comptroller's Office can help make tax filing quick, easy and painless," said Comptroller Franchot.
Free, state tax assistance is available at all of the agency's 12 taxpayer service offices, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional hours of assistance will be offered on Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., and on Tuesday, April 15, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at all agency locations.
Taxpayers can also download state tax forms, find helpful information and check the status of their refund by visiting the Comptroller's Web site, www.marylandtaxes.com or by calling 1-800-MD-TAXES for free state tax help Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. through April 18.
The Comptroller also offered tips to ensure taxpayers get their returns processed quickly.
"I encourage everyone to utilize iFile, the state's free internet filing system. It is safe, fast and convenient. Simply click on the iFile icon at www.marylandtaxes.com to start," he added.
Simple mistakes in filing can significantly slow down the processing of a return and refund. To ensure an accurate return, taxpayers should also remember to:
- Check, check, and re-check social security numbers, as well as bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit refunds and direct debit payments.
- Print clearly and do not use pencil on any paper return filed.
- Include all pertinent information including relevant forms and documents, such as the W-2 form.
- Sign the tax return.
Information on a number of changes for this year's tax season can also be found on the Comptroller's Web site including details on:
- Expanded military retirement tax breaks
- Increased pension exclusions
- Expanded earned income tax credits
- Reduced local income tax rate for Prince George's County residents
- New online payment options for existing personal liability
As a result of the federal government's stimulus plan, Comptroller Franchot reminds qualifying Marylanders to file a federal return but not a state return to be eligible for the special payment.
"Citizens who don't have to file because they fail to meet the minimum income threshold should submit a federal return this year in order to receive their payment; however, these Marylanders should not file a state return," Comptroller Franchot said.
Additionally, Comptroller Franchot reminded taxpayers that the income tax changes enacted during the 2007 Special Session of the Maryland General Assembly has no effect on the 2007 Maryland income tax return.
